There was massive Growth in the aviation industry in INDIA in the last 20 years (2000-2020)
There were 13.7 million domestic travelers in India in 2000. It was 61.4 million in 2013 and 143 million in 2019 a tenfold increase in 20 years. To contextualize this growth: Twenty million people passed through Kolkata Airport alone in 2019, which is nearly twice as many as all of India did in 2000. 2019 saw more travelers pass through Delhi Airport than all of India combined did in 2013. In 2000, there were 113 aircraft total among all Indian carriers. In 2013, it reached 395; in 2019, it reached 706. The three biggest airlines in China each have over 700 aircraft, so even with this enormous increase, there is still an opportunity for enormous future growth in India.
The regional connection program, UDAN, and numerous other programs have all assisted in the sector’s growth over the past few years. Importantly, the VAT ATF taxes, which were 25 to 30%, have been reduced or eliminated in many states over the past few years under the current administration; most states have lowered them by 5%, and some have even gone as low as 1%. This has been one of the biggest proactive steps taken to prevent harm to the industry. The airports have seen expansion as a result. Actually, both our passenger volume and the number of flights have greatly increased.
